A meteor is an asteroid or cometary projectile that has entered the Earth's atmosphere at phenomenal speeds. Initial temperatures at the leading edge are 3000 degrees fahrenheit. Air compression causes intense heating. By the time it reaches the denser atmosphere the temperatures have risen to 18,000 degrees fahrenheit, hotter than the surface of the sun. Melting and vaporatization of solid material creates a luminous trail.
